folk? not hardly.
indie rock is more like it.
some of my favorite folk artists include, in no real order:
Vashti Bunyan
Espers
Vetiver
Marissa Nadler
Devendra Banhart (first two albums)
Ulver (one album)
Jimmie Spheeris
Bright Eyes (strong folk influences)
and probably more i'm forgetting too.

Get some Joanna Newsom, CocoRosie, Sufjan Stevens, and Iron and Wine. All really good folk/folk-rock people.

I really like Defiance, Ohio. I'm starting to get more and more into folk punk.

I checked them out. I like how they don't rely on amps and mics and how they backpack to a lot of their shows. They're awesome for a two-person band who uses pretty much no electricity to play.

their raw intensity is amazing.
also, there's this band from Mississippi called Rosa with the same ethos, playing all their shows without even a mic. and they're a five or six piece, so it's pretty impressive.
i have them on vinyl somewhere and i'll rip it for you if you want. i've had zero luck tracking down any mp3's of their stuff.

I love Steeleye Span! I rarely ever meet anyone else who likes folk music too. If you like them, you might like Fairport Convention or Pentangle also, they're some of my favorite folk-rock groups.
