In looking to build a better SP-AT pokemon that primarily battles SP-AT pokemon, I breeded for one that was MILD (SPAT+, DEF-) nature.
Looking at the Natures Guide http://www.psypokes.com/lab/natures.php, so far so good.
But in looking at its Characteristics ... it "Hates to Lose", which seems to imply that its highest IV value is SP-DEF.
http://www.psypokes.com/dp/characteristics.php
So, how does these sync up?
Does it mean that Nature implies stat growth modifiers ... and it will get better SPAT than DEF ... but oh, by the way, both of them stink in the big picture, as well as ATT and SPD, since SP-DEF IV is the highest characteristic?
Not sure I understand how Characteristics figure in - or how to read that chart...
Thanks in advance for your wisdom...

the characteristics mean that you're highest IV is SpD. That doesn't mean that the other IVs are bad (use the IV calculator to find out what they are).

The nature simply modifies the IVs... it doesn't 'make' one the highest...
For example, if your pokémon had 10 IVs in SP-AT, and 31 in SP-DEF, even with the SP-AT+ modifier the SP-DEF value is still the highest
otherwise characteristics would be useless - as natures would suffice

The Nature of a Pokemon does not modify IVs; it changes how high a stat will get at maximumn.

DV/IVs and Natures are two different characteristics altogether, and they are not linked except for the fact that both are stat modifiers.

Yeah... a desired characteristic and nature is almost impossible to get on a pokemon.

not true. With breeding, you have a 50% chance of getting the nature. Also, parents pass down 3 IVs to their children, so getting a pokemon with the right nature and good IVs may take a few hours, but is far from impossible.

Only if you have a breedable pokémon (or ditto?) with the nature you want (+ an everstone - not hard to get) otherwise it zips back down to 1 in 16 (or however many natures there are)
And passing on 3 IVs is great, if you know which IVs they have, and they actually have good ones... so there is a 1 in 32 chance of getting 31 IVs in a stat, and 50% chance of that passing on to a baby, which then has to be checked to see if it has that IV...
I would reckon that it could take a lot longer than a few hours... especially since you have to hatch the eggs...

it's 3, not 1 from each parent. And yes, there are 25 natures, which is why the Everstone trick is so valuable.

the only way to get a good team is if you plan out your team. like me i know my team before i started the games. and then u get the natures you want then ev train. ev train gets boring but it can make your pokemon invinceible if u do it right. thats i got to say. i got my dream team. now im breeding for the right natures i want.
