Did they ever state in the show whether Pikachu was a boy or a girl?

I think she's a girl.

Well there was an episode where Dawn's Buneary had a crush on Pikachu and I'm 100% sure that Buneary is a female and since Pokemon is a kid's show...

I always thought it was female, but if the new episodes go by the gender differences in appearance, then it would be male

I would say male, however in the movie with lucario, pikachu was missing and Misty or some other person said 'don't worry Ash, we'll get IT back."

Yes, I'm pretty confident that Pikachu is a guy. Remember that one episode where Pikachu saw all those other Pika's and was about to leave Ash? Yeah, there was a Pikachu with a flower on her ear, Pikachu liked her, it's a boy

Well since it has no dent in its tail I reckon Pikachus a boy. But I think Krisp may have a point...

I completely agree. They keep refering to Ash's Pikachu as "it" even now. However, the Buneary crush is pretty convincing stuff to make it a boy, despite it's crazy girliness. Notice how Pikachu has always bee good with girls and not always boys - me thinks he has been out to cop a feel this whole time! ;p

Well, I also agree with Krisp but in my mind, (although out loud I refer to Pikachu as "it"), it's male.

I always thought Pikachu was a male because of an epsiode back in the Indigo series (I think it was the Princess Day one) when all the girls were fighting over clothes while the guys were sitting on the bench, looking worn out-including Meowth and Pikachu. Of course, there's the whole 'dent in the tail' factor but I don't know if they'll add that to the anime or not.

I refer to Pikachu as male though in any episode I think Meowth is the only one referred to as a Him or She, and that was just one of the team rocket dou's saying "I'm going to miss him" or something like that. The only thing I remember that hints to Pikachu is the Bunnery thats is in love with em.

Toughie...I'll have to agree with krisp: If Ash found it before there were genders, then it probably still doesn't have a gender. But that I'm 55% sure of. The other 45% thinks it's a boy.

I don't think that the illustriters care about the genders
