Assuming they will only produce one more set of games in that time, and by use of a least square regression line, I predict there will be about 611 Pokémon in 2013.

baised on the average amount released in each generation and how long between, they will have one new one in the next five years and our total will be 638. i did the math in my head so it might be off, and im not nintendo so i cant say for sure.

With each new generation, the legendaries go even higher.
Mewtwo was a scientific creation by humans.
Articuno etc. are the embodiments of their respective elements.
Lugia contains the power of the aforementioned birds.
Ho-Oh contains the power of the beasts, and was also the one who revived them.
Kyogre etc. are the entities of Water, Land, and Sky.
Dialga and Palkia are the entities of Time and Space.
And Arceus is the entity of everything, the god Pokemon.

Nevertheless, I would think that Nintendo would make another generation, as the games are doubtless a major source of profit. Although perhaps their creativity in making new pokemon including in legendaries' backgrounds would decrease, they would make more pokemon because people would buy it.

They went way overboard with legendaries this generation. Perhaps next game they'll chill out with them a little more and make them more down-to-earth like Raikou, Entei and Suicune are.

My guess is 493. Why? There've been a rumour lately, that D/P is the last series of Pokemon. Why? Dunno. Nintendo make great dough from Pokemon, but people are saying D/P is the last series.

That rumor is so full of crap that I didn't bother to avoid saying so bluntly. Nintendo not only is both famous and infamous for releasing countless games from popular franchises, but are also in possession of most of the best selling franchises in the industry, including Pokémon, the second most popular, only after their own Mario, which got a ten year head start. If Nintendo had any more ability to print money than they already do from Pokémon, they'd call them the Federal Reserve. It makes zero sense from a business and fanbase standpoint to stop making Pokémon games. Why on God's green Earth would they make millions of fans unhappy and sacrifice millions of dollars (billions if Pokémon has enough longevity) for no benefit?

It's absolute nonsense that they'd stop after Diamond and Pearl.

That's a really good question, but I don't really know...
Since they've already gone to the top of all legendaries, if the Pokémon Company/Nintendo want to keep releasing video games, they will have to be non-legends (or maybe a lower-power legend...). However, I will guess 573 (which is only one new generation) because all the new Pokémon introduced are the most uncreative things I have ever seen in my life. Nintendo/Pokémon Company might run out of ideas (and if a 5th gen comes out you might see a a Toilet Pokémon ) and would stop creating the games.

I think there's a chance that the number of Pokemon will exceed 500, but on the other hand, there's really no point in creating any more.

The new game will not necessarily be the third version of 4th generation. It might be something like Dash, Trozei, Dungeon etc.

personally i think they should stop making more pokemon because there is already lots of em. we dont need 100000000000000 pokemon....

Or they should constantly have a design team working on new Pokémon, scrapping them as they see fit if they aren't good enough, while the new games are being worked on by the main Pokémon team. The games should then be released when a respectable number of good Pokémon have been designed and have had time to be programmed into the game. They are probably working on a time table, which is why many of them are less than inspired. We may have to wait longer, but if they could take their own sweet time, I think the result would be much more enjoyable.
