How do you know that Game Freak hasn't already designed a bunch of new pokemon? I mean, they could have already designed them a long time ago and they are just releasing a few of them for each new game...

Well, they're constantly designing new Pokémon. I doubt too many of the ones they're working on now were created very long ago.

I have to agree here with Krisp - 493.
With each new generation, the legendaries go even higher.
Mewtwo was a scientific creation by humans.
Articuno etc. are the embodiments of their respective elements.
Lugia contains the power of the aforementioned birds.
Ho-Oh contains the power of the beasts, and was also the one who revived them.
Kyogre etc. are the entities of Water, Land, and Sky.
Dialga and Palkia are the entities of Time and Space.
And Arceus is the entity of everything, the god Pokemon.

^How can you get higher than that?

Game Freak could create new types, and Legendaries for those types.

Or they could go "down" and make legendaries that represent the rest of the "elements" and things in Earth that hadn't been covered by Pokemon yet. For example: Gravity, Chakra/Energy, Wind, Stars, Sun (Solrock doesn't count), Clouds, underworld, Heaven, Plasma, Eclipses, meteors, etc.

I think Diamond and Pearl are the epitome of Pokefection! I really don't see how much more they can improve upon aside from small tweaks like Platinum will introduce.....that isn't to say that I don't want more Gamefreak Pokemon games! I just hope when they release gen 5 they don't go overboard with new Pokemon. I'd love it if the gen 5 game simply introduces a new land with a new story but with old Pokemon....or it lets you travel to all the lands from previous games!

Assuming they maintain their current release pattern around 837 pokemon will be avaliable by 2013.

For any interested the pattern is as follows;

every 2 years a game is released.

every even number game +7 pokemon to the previous in that pattern.

every odd number game -14 pokemon to the previous in that pattern.

this is assuming they don't make anymore remakes.
(unfortunately this includes platinum, so already my theory is destroyed)

Um.... WHAT?

We're either going to have 498 Pokemon in five years (in the event that Gamefreak takes a break after generation four, which would be unlikely after the massive success of DP) or we'll reach the lower-mid 600s after the release of generation five. Five years is NOT that long and I don't know why you guys think we'll double our current amount of Pokemon by then. We'll only have one more generation of Pokemon, which is about 100 or so additional Pokemon.

-Pocket Monsters Red and Green were released in February 1996 in Japan. They had 151 new Pokemon.
-Pocket Monsters Gold and Silver were released in November 1999 in Japan. They had 100 new Pokemon.
-Pocket Monsters Ruby and Sapphire were released in November 2002 in Japan. They had 135 (+3 Deoxys) new Pokemon.
-Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl were released in September 2006 in Japan. They had 107 (+2 Wormadam) new Pokemon.

As you can see, there is a three to four year difference between main titles in the Pokemon franchise and each set introduces between 100 and 151 Pokemon. Additionally, the anime suggests that the wait for generation five will be, at the very least, closer to four years; the anime and the current generation of Pokemon games have always been in sync, at least as far as Japan is concerned, and Ash is only just facing Wake, after twenty months since the beginning of the Diamond and Pearl series, in the Japanese version. Thus we have roughly another 20 months until generation five at bare minimum, and that's only if the anime doesn't introduce another filler quest like the Orange Islands or the Battle Frontier due to the production of the next set of games running long.

So in five years, we'll have the same number of Pokemon we have now or one more generation's worth of Pokemon. None of this 800-something nonsense.

5 years isn't very long....most likely a 100 more or so would be introduced. Let's just hope Nintendo doesn't run out of ideas for Pokemon and decide to stop pokemon. :?

Well, anyway, besides this topic's thirst for brains and flesh overwhelming me due to the fact that it was 4 months dead... I think there will be about 650 pokemon in 5 years, that should be enough time for the 5th generation to be out and about. I can't wait to see what it's like! Hopefully they'll have a new type added in, hopefully light type. I mean, they do have dark, so why not light? It would most likely be added to previous pokemon like steel was when the 2nd gen came out. I have a feeling Cresselia would be part light type.

I don't think the Arceus factor is any conclusive proof that Pokémon is finished.

I think the real question would be - if there is a 5th generation of Pokémon, how many Pokémon will it have?

151.
100.
135.
107.

So by this pattern, it will be greater than 107, but less than 135.

I just can't wait until who this Pokémon #666 will be. A Dark/Poison type with levitate (so no weakness)?

I can't decide on which number is better to stop at, 1,000, or 999. I wouldn't mind either way if they stopped at 999 or 1,000.

As for what they could do in the 5th generation video games, well, I wonder if it'll be like the 3rd. The 3rd was a land vs. water event. I suppose they could go forest vs. ice event. And maybe a legendary fire that can destroy both of the deities for forests and ice.

Or more outer space stuff..

It'd be nice if they can introduce more elements. Something that poison and dragon attacks are both super effective on, so those elements can have the 4x super-effective opportunity. And be .5 against ice element.

I just found it a little strange that no one noticed it was an old topic... I mean, especially a mod...

Boy, if you think Nintendo comes up with ideas for Pokémon, you're not a serious Pokémon fan.

I did notice. And the reply that revived the thread wasn't pointless or off-topic. So what was your point?

I didn't mean to sound like a "back-seat mod", but I'm just used to zombie topics being punted out the window with no questions ask. Maybe I was just raised by over reactive mods...

possible wrong?

considering that it has taken 3 years in between each generation (excuse gen 3 - gen 4), they have already been at work on gen 5 for maybe a year now, and it should be released around August - November 2009, and that should ad a good 120 onto the series. (that is 613), after that pressuming generation 6 actually comes out (that is a LOT of pokemon) that will add another 120, bringing the amount up to 733. Accounting for previous time frames (apx. 3 yrs.) that will come out in 2012.

2012-2008= 4 years.

so about 800 pokemon in the next 5 years is feasible.

(please excuse me if you think this is rude)

The problem here is that you're making two major assumptions you have no basis to make.

1) That Generation V will come out three years after Generation IV because that was the waiting period between RBY/GSC and GSC/RSE. It doesn't take Gamefreak set intervals of time to make these games, and it's also been rumored that they want to take a break from the series after Diamond and Pearl. It took Diamond and Pearl four years and I think that's because they made a lot of changes and added more to the games. They're not going to regress after DP, so a similar waiting period would be expected. A three year waiting period would also mean that Japan is getting Generation V next fall, but they're not even getting the third version of Generation IV for several more months yet. Ignoring all of that, there's also the fact that Nintendo has yet to announce a new handheld and every generation of Pokemon has been a different handheld (I on Game Boy, II on Game Boy Color, III on Game Boy Advance, IV on the DS).

2) That Gamefreak has been working on Generation V for a year now. Again, they don't even have the third version of Generation IV out in any region yet. Common sense dictates that they'd be working more on the current game that just about every seasoned Pokemon fan would be expecting rather than the new Pokemon games that few people are expecting yet. If Generation V were really only a year away, we would know at least the bare minimum information about it by now. It hasn't even been announced at this point. We've gotten at least one new Pokemon at least a year before the new games with every series. There's also no reason to change this because introducing new Pokemon via the anime and movies is a good way to tease the fans about the new games. Munchlax was introduced in the second Advanced Generation movie; the second Diamond and Pearl is only a month away and there's been no information about a new Pokemon making its debut. Evidence enough that Gamefreak are not working at the same rate as previous generations.
