According to a conference held by Nintendofixed -.-, a brand-new DS is coming out called the DSi, which is very similar to the DS lite except for the fact that it has an SD card reader and a two built-in digital cameras. However, it doesn't have a GBA slot in it, so all people with DS lites and a lot of GBA games might want to reconsider buying it.

Discuss.

Link to it

I was about to post this, lol.

I probably won't get it, I only got a new DS in March. It looks good, though...It has a better camera than my phone.

I think this is more of Nintendo's attempt to stop the R4 than to make a new DS. I might get one if they're not too expensive. The fact that it has no GBA slot kinda turns me off it. :?

Yes, they really should put a GBA slot or at least a separately slod GBA adapter where you put your GBA cartridge and you plug the adapter in the DS cartridges slot.

I've got a bet riding with friends (a small one, but a bet all the same): Although it is white and black for color choices, I'm sure that a special OriginTina version to be realeased with Platinum. A bundle for 220 USD? Maybe...

180 for the DS
35 for Platinum
----
215

Factor in that its a special origin ds, and it may come with a special gift card of a bonus 4,000 points (for a total of 5,000).

I'm just hoping it comes in time for Platinum.
Maybe it will be unveiled with the release of platinum, much like this ds was with respect to DP http://www.dsfanboy.com/2006/09/01/poke ... on-ds-lite .

We already have six different units to legally play GBA games on; GBA, GBA SP, GBA Micro, GCN Gameboy Player, DS, and DS Lite. Do we really need a seventh? I don't think so.

I'm still on my first, big, bulky Nintendo DS.
Gamestop always sends me newsletters that say "trade in your GBA SP or Original DS and get a new DS lite for" blah blah blah, but I honestly perfer the Bigger DS.
The buttons are bigger and I don't feel like I need to get transplanted gnome-hands just to play it.
That being said, I won't be getting this "new" DS unless they make old-lady big buttons on it.
Or I can download GC onto it.
Mmmm..... Metriod Prime on the go....

Let's look at this realistically. As long as it's got the Nintendo brand name on it, people -will- buy it. It doesn't matter how unnecessary it is. Nintendo could market compost to these people and they'd still buy it. Why? Because it's Nintendo. As long as the DS continues to print money, Nintendo will continue to manufacture new models. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Nintendo fanboy but even I think they're just going too far with this. And along with Platinum, they're milking Pokemon for all it's worth. Platinum is not a new game. It's Diamond and Pearl with bits stuck on. If you're seriously considering buying it because you think it will be the best thing since sliced bread then look at the previous third instalments. Crystal and Emerald. Did they bring anything new to the series? Did they drastically change the gameplay? No. They stuck bits on and took bits away to make it appear innovative and new. That is all. Rant over.

The DSi is not coming to foreign shores until late 2009, especially since the DS Lite is still selling well. As for the SD Card Slot, it certainly is welcome to us, and homebrew developers of course, but I don't think this was created to fight the R4 per se. If anything, it actually encourages piracy, since it is now easier to access a memory card - you don't even need the R4 to read a SD card any more.

Umm first of all Pokemon hasn't been innovative in a long while, and Nintendo has been "milking" Pokemon for years now so are you blind or just plain stupid? And you act as if all Nintendo does is just Print Money and doesn't give a :censored: about anything else. The DSi has so many features and you are saying they are going to far with this? What the :censored: is wrong with you? And not everyone buys Nintendo stuff because it says "Nintendo" on it, and the DSi isn't unnecessary at all heck this is more than what a lot of people expected. And I don't think people are going to buy Pokemon Platinum with the mindset that it will be the past thing since "Sliced Bread". I tried HARD not to SCREAM At this.

Well at least there will be one left in stock left for someone who does need it.

You honestly think they will have an option to download Metroid Prime on a DS, for gods sake they are remaking Metroid Prime 1 and 2 for the Wii with Wii Controls along with a bunch of other Game Cube titles. (Hopes for Custom Robo)

Thank you R_R at least someone realizes that the new DS doesn't need one of these. Besides shouldn't people have one of these by now? Even then these can be found in used game stores for about $25 to $35 nowadays.

You know not everything is from Serebii and nowhere else, and Nintendo announced this themselves at a conference held on Thursday.

That looks awesome. This would be WAY too expensive but I can imagine a DSi phone. That's a distant dream though. I am SO getting that DSi next year.

If I end up deciding to get a new DS for some reason since mine doesn't work, I will buy this one. But I don't see too many things that will interest in the future. I am glad that the GBA slot is gone. It needs to die.

The SD slot will be useful for the DSWare store that is proposed - the game can be downloaded to the SD card, etc, etc.

Maybe it'll be like this, especially with pokemon games: Assuming the GBA games are available as DSWare products, you will be able to download a legal rom to the SD card, and then you go to a major retailer to transfer the save file from the gba cart to the rom. Thus, you can now play the gba game on the DS - sweet, no?

Its a theory, nothing set in stone.

It should be noted that I was planning on getting an old DS so I could transfer all of my pokemon, but I'm glad I said "Nah, too expensive - lemme wait until the economy crashes, and the prices really fall".

Edit: It is now confirmed that the DSi will be released in Dec 2008 for Japan, and Spring 2009 for the UK. http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol ... 873544.ece

Thank you for making that clear to some of our users.

Yes, because Nintendo definitely won't make an attempt to fight piracy on their systems. Great theory!

As for the DSi, I'll definitely be picking one up. The only thing I need to decide is black or white - I'll probably get black, since my DS and Wii are white.

Just to clarify, I didn't say everybody thinks Platinum will be the best thing ever. Secondly, just because I have a different view to you, everything I say is wrong? And as for Nintendo caring about nothing else but money... It's true. They're an international company, they won't stop making something they know people will buy. And I didn't say everyone buys Nintendo stuff because it says Nintendo on it. But unfortunately there are people like that. There are people that do think Platinum will be awesome and change the face of Pokemon, granted they're mainly small children but this is happening. If you don't think it is then I'm sorry but you're just naive.

I don't know how it is in socialist Europe, or whatever world you live in, but isn't that the point of business, capitalism, and everything that the US and Japan stands for? Exapand until you've reached the whole world, and make as much as you can. I don't see any problem with that, do you?

By the way, except for pokemon fans, the DS Lite is outclassed by the DSi.
Also, do you realise that the DSi has a camera on the outside (3 megapixel) and a 0.3 Megapixel on the inside? I thought it was 2 cameras on the nside, but whatever. SWEET!

Does it have all the same functions as a DS Lite? (Other than the fact that you can't play gameboy games, which means you can't use the pal park feature in diamond/pearl)

Yea it has all the same features except the GBA slot plus it has a camera and some other things I can't remember. The camera part sounds really cool to me it kind of makes me not care about it not having a GBA slot.

EDIT: Here's a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5qKkkFKp5g
Also you're right about the GBA slot I didn't realize that we had six systems to play GBA games on and together me and my brother have 5 so my first post in this topic was really dumb.

Okay, here's my two cents in. If this DSi comes out, then everyone might be getting it anyway. I heard that it also has a media player, which probably means videos & mp3s. Sounds to me like Nentendo is just trying to compete with Sony's PSP in the same areas. Which is STUPID in my opinion. Yes, too many things with the GBA slot is annoying, but you NEED the GBA slot in order to capture all the pokemon. Migrating, Pal Park and the Dual Slot wild only Pokemon will disappear as well. So you would have to transfer EVERYTHING from GBA games now if you were going to trade your DS lite for the DSi.

In short, the DSi is pretty cool. But it should have been a new system altogether, not a Nintendo DS remake.

-Ryan

This is really shocking. :O

I honestly wouldn't make it a first priority to buy. I like the GBA slot, I use it to play Emerald in the car once the GBA's dead. Anyway, I'm a gamer, and taking away my games wouldn't make me very happy.

It does sound really awesome though. :)
