As almost all of the other members will tell you, focus on having diverse types. However, there are a bunch of possibilities for a great team. Obviously, there are some that other people agree on more than others, and some of those are obvious (if they have them, that is...):
Charizard
Mewtwo
Zapdos
Lapras
Snorlax/Chansey (good mention)
Alakazam
Really, everyone will tell you their favorites in the hope you'll agree with them... Consider this, though. A team should be diverse more than anything else. So go with your gut if you want to ask what the six best Pokemon are. Some will be a consensus (look at Charizard, the runner-up in the first Poke Idol competition, and Mewtwo, who everyone calls uber in RBY), but most won't...
Hope this helps!

Almost any well trained team can be considered to be strong.
It helps if you concentrate on the moves each pokemon has as well as the pokemon's strenghth and type.
But as it was mentioned before every person has their own idea of the perfect team so it is up to you to decide.

you take your well trained team of beedrill, raticate, fearow, parasect, seaking, and farfetch'd
and fight any other team mentioned here and see what happens.

Venusaur
Mewtwo

Machamp was win back in that Generation; despite the improved moves the old school Machamp and Golem have my heart.

My Ultimate Team was
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
I beat the E4 first time with this team and ironically beat Leaf Green the first time with the same exact team.

To be honest, they vary from person to person, depending on what types you prefer to battle with..just experiment with different pokemon in your team..what i found useful is using ditto a lot on trainers pokemon and it gives a good feel on a pokemon before you catch one.

THe only thing i dislike about using a is the hit he has to take during the transform turn.

If you want a Ditto that can Transform first, you need one with high HP and higher SPD. Pump it Vitamins, and your Ditto should be able to "strike" first. As to problems, just train it to Lv. 100!
However, everyone is individual, and their favorite Pokemon will be different so it's best to tailor your own results.

Yeah, thats's how my ditto is
It is +speed nature (doesnt matter which - it is)
It has 31 HP IV's and it is Ev trained: 252 Spd/252 HP/4 Atk. Works a charm

um....
To all of the above posters: there wasnt speed natures and EV's in this generation.
I am fully aware of how to train a per gen IV or III standards but its different for gen I & II

I was actually trying to go with a Gen 1 outlook. I didn't say anything about natures or IVs...
Vitamins did exist, and those can help for probing the Pokemon world with Ditto...

Yeah which is a shame...
But, it's good when i play against my brother when we whip out the link cables. I don't even think he knows that the Vitamins do anything good. Bless, he's 14 aswell. :'D

I'm going to disregard Mewtwo because he's a given and usually banned from normal play, so:
Alakazam - Great damage with psychic, which is amazing in r/b/y, fast, thunder wave, recover, etc.
Starmie - Also fast, can chose from surf, psychic, blizzad/ice beam, thunderbolt, recover, thunderwave
Exeggutor - Both sturdy and powerful, can use things like sleep powder and leach seed.
Slowbro - If amnesia abuse is pulled off correctly, becomes godly with surf/psychic, thunderwave, and rest.
Persian - Very useful for cleaning up weakened pokemon with its high speed and guaranteed critical slash. Can also get bubblebeam which is great against the likely rock/ground switch in.
Rhydon - Very powerful with its rockslide and earthquake. Also useful with body slam's chance of paralysis. I like using it against already paralyzed pokemon because of his speed, and it's also useful for stopping physical and electric attacks.
Not necessarily as a team, but probably my individual 6 favorite.
