Skateboarding. They call the skateboarders athletes, but they don't have like t.v events, just live events. I consider this a sport because it involves getting active and doing something that increases your heartrate. What do YOU think?

By technicality, sports have more to do with competition and less to do with activity. Skating is, by definition, a sport.

I consider it a sport, as you are active. And not sitting in front of a TV.

I say sport because I actively skateboard, try to every day, and it's nothing thats considered a hobby. Take knitting. You can do it once in a while for fun. Its a hobby. Skateboarding requires hard work, dedication, and alot of time. There are skateboarding competitions (X-Games anyone?) But i'm sure someone is able to argue that it's a hobby.

If it can be argued that golf and racing is a sport than skateboarding is easily a sport as well. It keeps you active as well as taking a lot of skill. I myself do not and cannot skateboard but often times wish that I could.

If you consider figure skating, gymnastics, or any other arbitrarily judged competition a sport, then by those standards skateboarding would be a sport.

For me, it really depends. If it is competing against someone or plain old showing off tricks, it's a sport. If it is just riding your skateboard around doing nothing, it is a hobby.

I would say its sport if you ride and do tricks on it but if you just collect them mostly I would say a hobby more=D

I am shocked that someone would argue Skateboarding is not a sport. I fully expected this topic to be about Poker, or competitive chess or something.
For the record, if people compete in it, I consider it a sport.

It depends on what you take it as.
I skate, but just to mess around with friends,
so i consider it one of my hobbies.
Some people will actully go out there and do it day in and day out
thats a sport to them.
I say both, depending on why you do it.

I think that in general skateboarding is just a hobbie.
However, in the mall advanced devisions it can be considered a official sport.

it would depend of what you make of it. if you make events go to get togethers with other people, then it would be a sport.
If you do it just for fun with ya mates then i see it as more of a hobbie.

I'd agree, if you compete in some sort of skateboarding events, then I would consider that a sport. But if you just do it casually, or for a laugh with mates, I suppose that's just a hobby.

Skateboarding is a sport if you are doing tricks and showing off. if you just sit on them and roll down a hill, I will call that a hobby. that is what i do.

yeah it depends because a sport is where you compete and there are some skateboarding events and when you just get your skateboard to kill time i consider it a hobby.

Yeah because it can be competitive...
But a more Controversial issue would be is video game tournaments a sport... And yes I believe they are...

I it is done competitively, it is a sport; it s only a hobby is it is done because you're bored. I have a cousin who would have killed me if I said otherwise, because to him, it was a "way of life". His own words. He really was obsessive over it, he skated during the day, sun or rain, played skating games at night, or snow, had all sorts of Tony Hawk paraphanelia. Then one day he just broke and burnt his board...apparently he wanted a life. Hasn't had anything to do with skating since, as far as I know. He does have a trick skooter now though...

Skateboarding requires hard work, dedication, and alot of time. There are skateboarding competitions (X-Games anyone?) But i'm sure someone is able to argue that it's a hobby. Let me give you a little backstory. I sing in a barbershop chorus (and have in quartets as well), and that is most obviously a hobby. However, while we know singing is not a "sport", there are International competitions where choruses compete every summer (and sometimes winter too), and I have four medals from such contests. It takes a LOT of hard work, dedication, and I devote a ton of time to it. But I consider it my greatest hobby. So by that definition, is barbershop singing now a sport?
Now that I've given my spiel, I will admit that skateboarding does require a lot more physical effort than something like singing, or playing pool. However, I maintain that it is not a sport. A lot of skateboarders don't usually skate for contests, merely for fun or as a social activity. That, for me, outlines a hobby. Your thoughts?
(BTW, awesome knitting video! You can find some really obscure competitions for just about everything!)

Skateboarding is definitely a sport, you can easily get injured doing it so that alone tells me that it isn't much of a hobby really...
It can be considered a hobby by some people but should never be generally excepted or taken as a hobby of any kind, imo...

It's definately a sport because it's in the X games, which are awesome .
